Eagles Split with Cimarron, Face Tough Road Test at Haven Triangular

The Colby High School Eagle softball team packed a full slate into the final week of April and opening days of May, battling through four games that showcased both offensive firepower and areas still taking shape as the postseason approaches.

Colby opened the stretch on April 28 at home with a doubleheader split against Cimarron, highlighted by a high-scoring 13-9 victory in game one. The Eagles overcame early defensive miscues to take control midway through the contest, fueled by a six-run third inning that shifted momentum for good.

That inning was punctuated by a three-run home run from Fia Tubbs, part of a strong day at the plate where she finished with three RBIs and two runs scored. Ryler Carter added production both in the circle and at the plate, collecting two hits and two RBIs while striking out 12 batters across seven innings of work.

Colby’s lineup showed depth throughout the opener, with Myka Nolan and Morgan Hills each contributing two hits and two RBIs. Nolan also scored twice, while Hills added a pair of runs driven in as the Eagles capitalized on timely hitting to counter Cimarron’s offensive pressure.

Despite building multiple leads, the game remained competitive into the later innings as Cimarron rallied to tie the score in the fifth. Colby responded immediately with a four-run bottom half, highlighted by a two-run double from Hills and a two-run single from Nolan to regain control.

Game two of the doubleheader told a different story, as Cimarron jumped out early and never relinquished control in an 11-5 win over the Eagles. A five-run first inning put Colby on its heels, forcing the Eagles to play from behind throughout.

Colby did show flashes offensively in the loss. Kenley Moss and Maddie McCarty each connected for solo home runs, while Ellie McCarty added two hits and a run scored. The Eagles chipped away midgame, cutting into the deficit with a three-run stretch across the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to sustain the rally as Cimarron added insurance late.

The schedule intensified on May 2 as Colby traveled to Haven for two games with Augusta and Haven, facing two strong programs. The Eagles dropped both contests, falling 10-0 to Augusta and 7-0 to Haven.

Against Augusta, Colby struggled to generate consistent offense, managing just a handful of base runners while defensive miscues allowed the Orioles to steadily build their lead. Myka Nolan and Fia Tubbs each recorded hits, but the Eagles were unable to string together scoring opportunities.

In the circle, Carter worked six innings and recorded four strikeouts, but Augusta capitalized on errors and timely hits to pull away.

The finale against Haven followed a similar pattern, with the Wildcats using early power and steady pressure to control the game. A two-run home run in the first inning set the tone, and Haven added runs in the middle innings to extend the lead.

Fia Tubbs drives through a pitch during Colby’s matchup with Cimarron, finishing the week with a home run, 4 hits, 4 runs scored, and 3 RBIs.

Colby found limited offensive success, with hits from Nolan and Madi Hull, but struggled against Haven’s pitching, which kept the Eagles off balance throughout. Landrie McKee logged six innings in the circle, limiting hits at times but working through defensive challenges behind her.

While the week ended with tough results, Colby’s performance against Cimarron demonstrated the team’s offensive ceiling and ability to respond under pressure. With contributions spread throughout the lineup and strikeout production from the pitching staff, the Eagles continue to show the tools needed to compete as they push deeper into the season.

Colby will look to clean up defensive execution and build consistency at the plate as the schedule continues, aiming to turn competitive stretches into sustained success in the weeks ahead.
