The Northwest Kansas Pioneers MTB Team turned in one of their most memorable outings of the young season on April 12 at Fancy Creek in Manhattan, KS, battling through challenging weather conditions to deliver a series of gutsy and impressive performances.
Weather and Course Conditions
The race weekend tested the resolve of athletes and officials alike. The Tuttle Creek area received 9.5 inches of rain on Friday night, leaving the course slick and sloppy and prompting race officials to consider canceling the event altogether. Saturday's warming and drying conditions ultimately saved the race, though teams were limited to two practice laps on the trail rather than the usual three hours of course time. Race day itself opened with threatening skies before giving way to sunshine in the afternoon.
Race Results
In the 5th Grade division, Hunter Hayes of Colby delivered one of the day's most inspiring performances. After being squeezed into the fence on the race start and going down with three other riders, Hayes found himself at roughly a 45-second deficit before he had even found his stride. Rather than surrender ground, he methodically worked his way back through the field — passing nine competitors on his way to a 7th-place finish.
The Middle School C category featured strong showings from both Pioneers in the field. Jaxon Ohlrogge of Colby turned heads with an aggressive mid-race move, dismounting and sprinting past four competitors before remounting to finish 7th. Carter Terry of Atwood continued his development, willing himself from the back of a 36-rider field to a 16th-place finish, capped by a thrilling sprint to the line.
The day's signature performance belonged to team captain Parker Williams of Colby in the JV2 category. Williams controlled the pace through his first lap before shifting into another gear entirely — pulling away from the field to win his class by more than a minute and 28 seconds. The victory wasn't just dominant; it was timely, vaulting Williams into the top position on the season points leaderboard in JV2.
Teen Trail Corps
The Pioneers’ Jaxon Ohlrogge narrowly missed the top individual volunteer honor in NICA's Teen Trail Corps program as the Pioneer! Retained their 1st-place standing as a team. Looking ahead to a two-week break before the next race, the Pioneers plan to use the time to double down on trail maintenance hours and strengthen their lead in the team standings.
Looking Ahead
The Northwest Kansas Pioneers return to action on May 3rd at Louisburg, KS, carrying momentum from back-to-back strong outings and a growing reputation as one of Kansas's newest MTB teams to watch.
